The Taurus as far as I know is a copy of the Beretta M92FS. I fired my stepdad's beretta and liked it so I decided I wanted to get a pistol too. When I bought my first pistol I chose the Beretta because of peoples good reviews of the Beretta. I had also heard bad reviews from people that owned Taurus handguns and had ot return em because they broke. For quality I took the Beretta M92FS home and it never failed. Friends that I let fire the pistol said they liked it too so I recomend looking at the Beretta but the end decision is still up to you. Beretta can be easily used in both right and left hands. The Beretta's safety switch can be activated on either side of the pistol to accomidate right and left handed shooters. If you are left handed the magazine release button can also be switched over to go on the left or right to accomidate you. There are other manufacturers that can do that as well. Some gunshops may have used pistols too so look at other manufacturers and see what pistol feels good in your hand and that you can feel comfortable with the pistol that means alot when picking a handgun.

The Taurus model almost completely copies the Beretta 92's design. There is very little difference at all. I think that Taurus is an extremely underrated company. I have a revolver from them and have fired the 24/7 and several other revolvers from them. They have an ambidextrous safety/decocker switch which the 92 does not, something which might interest you as a lefty. All in all though, I'd say you couldn't go wrong with choosing the Taurus model over the Beretta. The quality of the Taurus model is right up there with the original.

The Taurus PT92 is very similar in appearance to the Beretta 92, but they are not the same. For starters, the Taurus is slightly larger, particularly in width. Although they both accept 15-round magazines, the magazines for the two guns are not interchangable. The Beretta's safety is mounted on the slide. The Taurus' safety is mounted on the frame. I've heard that the Taurus 92s were originally built on old Beretta tooling. Quality is reputed to be good. However, I find the fit and finish of the Beretta to be superior, and it feels better in my hand due to the slightly smaller grips.

Nothing wrong with either firearm. But this is 07' and both guns have been around a very long time,.with little updateing, or machine tool changes. I would look into other companies before I made my mind up. Like (in no certain order) Sig, Styer, Glock, S&W, Khar, Springfield Armory, Kimber and so on. Pick up the firearm, and see how it fights your hand. I have very small hands, and I have a hard time with the 92's and Ruger P series. Not saying there is anything wrong with them. I just don't feel very soild in useing one in an emergancy sistuation. So handle, shot (if you can) and understand everything you can about diff. firearms. How the load and rack. How they drop out, how they breakdown, just about every aspect you can get. Take someone with you that has experince in firearms. Like a Styer (which I own) when they empty, the slide stands open, which is nothing new. But when you slam a fresh clip in, the slide drops, with out you releaseing it. One step shorter in reloading. A very nice feature.
