→ | Springfield XD Subcompact vs. Beretta PX4 Storm? |
| | By Yahoo Answers | | 2008-04-13 21:17:08 | | I'm a young female college student looking to buy my first gun. I don't have much experience with shooting (I've shot a Beretta, a Glock, and a S&W .40), but, after going to the store and holding both the Beretta Storm and XD subcompact, I've decided that these two guns fit my hand the best. I am planning on getting a concealed carry license also, so size plays a factor as well as how they shoot. I have not had a chance to shoot either, so if anyone has had the chance to shoot both of these guns, could you please give me your recommendation and reasons as to why. | | Answered By: randy | |
| | I've fired and handled both extensively. I have a poor opinion of beretta from both personal experiences, customers experiences and law enforcement and military experience. I do really like the XD compact. In fact, I like it so much that I put it thru extensive testing, and it passed with flying colors. My wife now carries it as her CCW weapon of choice. Believe me, I would not allow her to carry it if I did not have complete faith in it.
Hope that helps. |
| User: HM | | haven't shot either, but next to Glocks 1911s,and Sigs,I hear more raving XD fanatics than any other carry/duty/whatever semi-auto pistol. | | | | User: Corvo | | I haven't shot the Beretta, although I have heard they are quality guns. I do own a Springfield XD40 in the 5" Tactical model, however, and would highly recommend the XD product line to any shooter.
My best advice, however, is to find a local gun shop that has a range, and ask to shoot both of them. Each person will have their own preferences, so you should buy the one you are most comfortable shooting.
Here's a quick list of the things I really like about my XD:
- Great accuracy and highly visible sights.
- Ergonomic/"natural" safety mechanisms. With the grip and trigger safeties, when you want to shoot the gun, you shoot the gun. There's no fumbling with an unfamiliar safety feature if you ever need your gun.
- Nice, crisp trigger pull. With some semi-autos, you'll experience a heavy and lengthy trigger pull (which takes it's toll on accuracy); not so with the XD.
- Very easy to field strip (watch the video on YouTube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=n7A9_Kh8bag). The PX4 seems to field strip relatively easily too, however (http://youtube.com/watch?v=pw2mbOSlDCo).
- The pistol uses a striking pin, rather than a hammer (one less thing sticking out). In order to carry the PX4 ready to shoot, the hammer must back, in the firing position. Not so with the XD.
If you are going for conceal carry, you should also check out some great holsters from Crossbreed.

Since I do not own, nor have I ever fired a PX4, this information is somewhat one-sided. I apologize for not having much information on the PX4.
Good luck with your decision. | | | | User: william s | | My suggestion would be, as mentioned, go rent each of them and see what you like. Personally, I really want to like the XD, but I prefer American made arms. | | | | User: bobbo342 | | I owned a Px4 and I do own two XDs (service and tactical, not the sub), and like all three firearms. I however would go with the XD. You have more options with gear and because it is smaller, easier to conceal. I also prefer the trigger pull and safeties over the Storm. I would also start with 9mm. .40calibers are a little hard hitting for beginners with recoil and I know plenty of police depts. by me that still use 9mm. | | | | User: randy c | | I've fired and handled both extensively. Hope that helps. | | | | User: brad | | XD b/c its a better gun... | | | | User: relaxed | | The Springfield XD has the advantage of not being an import, buy American and you get what you need. | | | | User: XD mayem | | I personally own the XD .40 S&W Compact and shot that as well as the PX4 Storm by Beretta this weekend 4/13/08. I can't put in words how much I enjoy my XD. Easy to field strip, clean, oil. The Beretta is not quite as easy. I like the double safety feature (trigger pull safety AND palm safety) of the XD better than the thumb safety of the Beretta. Shooting wise the XD was more accurate and had less muzzle climb (less recoil) than the Beretta. Both are great investments. But I would suggest the Springfield Armory XD Sub-compact or compact over the PX4 storm. | | | | User: Preceptor | | alot of people on here have a one sided veiw against beretta for some off reason even though the military has been using the beretta 92fs/M9 since it let go of 1911s. the px4 storm is an excellent gun and extremely reliable. what i would recommend is to shoot it and try it out before you pick the xd. a german police force took 3 px4s and put 10,000 rounds through each one without one jam. i know guys that have put well more than that through their px4s. these same guys have the 92 fs hand guns the military uses and have put 100,000+ rounds through some of them. so don't sell beretta short by any means.. there is a reason US military branches use them. if you have a chance go to berettaforum.net and speak with the any of the people there about the different guns. most of them have a love for guns in general and are extremely more honest about what they like and dislike about berettas and will give you a fair review about the xd you are looking at in comparison. if you were to go with the px4 or the xd i do agree about starting with the 9mm. your shots will be more controlled and its alot cheaper as well for ammo. also there is a px4 sub compact that will be coming out hopefully with in the next month that would be even better for concealed carry. I'm currently waiting on my chl to get in so that i can begin to carry as well.
